S. Craig Watkins

From the deployment of AI systems in policing to the application of predictive analytics in health care, the use of artificial intelligence in high stakes context is spreading. But what do we know about bias and disparate impacts in the design and deployment of artificial intelligence? Moreover, how are researchers and developers working to address these challenges?

MLK Visiting Professor S. Craig Watkins considers the current debates about bias and discrimination in artificial intelligence. Drawing from his research and collaborations at MIT and the Good Systems Grand Challenge at the University of Texas at Austin, Watkins will discuss an emergent AI future that is inclusive, accessible, and poised to mitigate the downstream impacts of structural inequality.

Learn about all this and the launch of the Research Initiative on Combatting Systemic Racism, an interdisciplinary effort in MITs Institute for Data Systems and Society that explores the use of big data and computational tools to effect change toward racial equity.
