Through our scientific and technological genius, we've made of this world a neighborhood. And now through our moral and ethical commitment, we must make of it a brotherhood.
Background
Thomas Searles is an associate professor of physics at Howard University, where he has established a new research program in applied and materials physics. Searles received his PhD in applied physics from Rice University and his BS in physics and mathematics from Morehouse College.
Interests
Searles’ research delves into quantum materials, metamaterials and quantum information science and engineering. His thesis work primarily focused on the magneto-optical properties of carbon nanotubes, and he has been recognized for his research in light-matter interactions and his capability to train and mentor Black students in physics and engineering. At Howard, Searles created a terahertz spectroscopy lab, which allows him to build on his optics research and mentor students as the lab studies materials for use in quantum computing.
