Steven L. Lee is a computer scientist/mathematician and Program Manager for Advanced Scientific Computing Research at the US Department of Energy. He was among the four inaugural MLK Visiting Professors at MIT. At the time of his appointment, Dr. Lee held positions at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the mathematical sciences section of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Research interests: applied mathematics, scientific computing, algorithms, numerical analysis, simulations, mathematical modeling, physics, and optimization.

1995-1997 Scholars

Steven L. Lee is a computer scientist/mathematician and Program Manager for Advanced Scientific Computing Research at the US Department of Energy. He was among the four inaugural MLK Visiting Professors at MIT, visiting for three semesters. Research interests: applied mathematics, scientific computing, algorithms, numerical analysis, simulations, mathematical modeling, physics, and optimization.

Dr. Lee earned an SB in Applied Mathematics from Yale University and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1993).  He has since held positions at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the mathematical sciences section of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and worked as a computational scientist at the Center for Applied Scientific Computing Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

In 1995, four years after the appointment of the first MLK Visiting Scholar, Henry McBay, Dr. Lee was appointed as an MLK Visiting Professor. He was one of four inaugural MLK Visiting Professors, including Wesley Harris (aeronautics and astronautics), Richard Joseph (political science), and Oliver McGee (civil and environmental engineering). During his visit, Dr. Lee was the main lecturer for 18.06 (Introduction to Linear Algebra) in the Department of Mathematics.  “To enrich the learning experience for the students,” he said, “I created a web site to give them instant access to homework assignments, practice exams, solutions, and demo programs. In three years it has been visited more than 70,000 times.”
